Nowadays this mostly includes pixel art, with occasional diversions into voxels, Along the way I started writing about art and gaming, featuring artists and projects thatĬaught my attention. I started Retronator in 2007 with the goal of making video games focused onĬreativity. Welcome to Retronator-my blog and game development studio. The game launched in Early Access today with positive reception on Steam ($15, Windows only), so why don’t just jump right into it. As you can imagine, Camila’s art skills increased quite a bit since the game’s conception. The art is a mix of pixel art and beautiful classical illustrations (for portraits and battle sequences), all done in obvious manga/JRPG style. The artist and creator Camila Gormaz came up with the concept already back in 2003, and it’s been her goal to make it happen ever since. Development really took off in 2015, with a demo and IndieGogo campaign following in 2016. The gameplay is focused on communication and quite literally so, as you have to employ interpreters to talk to characters of different nationalities. I dare say the whole focus on characters + dystopian military vibe even remind me of Final Fantasy VII. OK, don’t be too excited, it’s still a battle-based JRPG (with some sniping sequences to break the mold), but there are no random encounters, so each fight pushes the story forward. I made it over a year ago to show all the 2016 entries, but expanded it to show the latest theme and all recent submissions.ĭiving into previous years allows you to see a calendar of all the themes, explore tweets with most likes, see individual artists’ submissions, as well as see who got the most entries picked by the main account. The calendar is part of my Pixel Dailies Archive, which catalogs all submissions retweeted by the Pixel_Dailies account. I’m a bit late to this, but my 2018 Pixel Dailies calendar is finally live and operational. For that you can check out Retrospecs (iOS only). It doesn’t have any automatic filters (a la Instagram) that would make things look great with a press of a button. Otherwise it’s on sale right now on itch.io for $10 ($28 otherwise). You can get some decent results with it if you play long enough (kind of like Photoshop, if you know what you’re doing).
